There’s always loads of agency adverts for QS’s, more so at the start of the year it seems. Clearly EVERYONE’s strengthening their commercial teams right now (if you believed every ad…) but, the issue is, which ones are the real belters. There’s so much ad ‘noise’ everywhere, it’s hard to tell. What you really don’t want, is your CV being blindly sent to a thousand email addresses in the blink of an eye. How to devalue someone in 10 seconds.

So, I’ll tell you about mine. I know what you’re thinking, it’d better be good after all this…!

You’ll join as a Quantity Surveyor on a permanent basis (they’re after people who are happy to commit) on a salary of something like £70k to £75k as a base. You’ll also get other benefits (pension, healthcare etc) plus the chance to earn some pretty decent bonus money. Not your pie-in-the-sky-never-achievable-bonus either.

You’ll take on two or three projects at any one time, each valued at £1m to £5k. The projects are interesting, complex and you’ll be working directly with the client as opposed to a subcontractor/main contractor relationship. This gives you the chance to really get to know your clients and build a decent long term business relationship.

Business is as good as it’s every been. There’s more work coming through on top of record levels (which is why they need a QS) and it only looks like increasing. The projects are profitable – when you pride yourself on delivering a fantastic service, you get repeat business. At better rates normally.

They work in the flat out busy enabling works sector, working for clients who are converting and re-using existing structures. So cut & carve, structural alterations, new basements etc. If you add in the logistical challenge of working in zone one, it makes for an interesting ride.

Lastly, they’ll positively welcome career development minded individuals. There’s so much scope to progress here, if you really want to kick on with your career, it’ll be on a plate. Absolutely no glass ceiling of any kind, just clear progression.

So, what about you?

Only a couple of must-haves:

1. Quantity Surveying/Commercial Management degree
2. Full rights to work in the UK and able to get into London 5 days a week
3. Experience working on London projects a real plus (Even better if they’re civils, structures, enabling schemes)
